High-Power LED Driver Targets Portable Applications

Micrel’s MIC2299 is a high-brightness LED driver for portable applications, such as photoflashes and torch lights for mobile phones. This high-efficiency boost converter IC is rated for 7 W to 12 W, and features an integrated 3.5-A switch. The driver can deliver at least 1 A into two white LEDs, or 750mA into three white LEDs connected in series.

The MIC2299 operates at a fixed 2-MHz switching frequency, with efficiency reaching up to 90%. It operates from an input voltage of 2.5 V to 10 V. The IC is available now, starting at $1.70 for 1000-unit quantities.
