The MAX1953 is a current-mode, 1-MHz, PWM step-down, dc/dc controller for powering core, I/O, and memory supplies in various applications such as printers, graphic cards, RAID cards, base stations, telecom, and network equipment. The device’s 1MHz current-mode operation is said to provide excellent transient response while significantly reducing output capacitance, size, and cost. In addition, the MAX1953 addresses low input 3.3V and 5V bus applications without the need for a charge pump and features adjustable current-limit and short-circuit protection without the use of current-sense resistors. Internal digital soft-start is included to reduce in-rush current. Powerful gate drivers, rated at 2 ohms (typ) and 3 ohms (max), provide a wide range of output currents from 1A to 10A with up to 92% efficiency. Output voltage range extends from 0.8V to 0.86 x VIN. The MAX1953EUB comes in a 10-pin microMAX package and is priced starting at $0.99 each/1,000-up. Evaluation kits and application circuits are also available. MAXIM INTEGRATED PRODUCTS, Sunnyvale, CA.
