Boasting both high-side and low-side MOSFET drivers, the NCP1396 high-performance resonant-mode controller from ON Semiconductor permits the design of reliable and highly efficient power supplies for a variety of applications. It is important to stay away from the resonating peak in resonant topologies to keep the converter operating in the right region. Consequently, the NCP1396's 500-kHz voltage-controlled oscillator ensures an accurately adjustable minimum switching frequency. Supported by proprietary high-voltage technology, the controller includes a bootstrapped MOSFET driver for half-bridge applications accepting bulk voltages up to 600 V.

The NCP1396 offers multiple protection features, including detection of a broken feedback loop, fast and slow event inputs, and brownout detection to avoid operations from low input voltages. The device comes in two versions. The NCP1396A is designed for high-power consumer applications, and the NCP1396B suits industrial power supplies. The controller updates the NCP1395 as the basis for ON Semiconductor's open GreenPoint reference design for 220-W LCD-TV power supplies. A complete reference design documentation package is available at www.onsemi.com (keyword search: GreenPoint), as is additional information.

The NCP1396 comes in a SOIC-16 package and will soon be available in a PDIP-16 package. Price is $1.60 each in quantities of 2500.
