For high-power-over-Ethernet (PoE+) and IEEE 802.3af-compliant PoE applications, the MAX5952 quad power-sourcing-equipment (PSE) controller allows PoE+ systems to deliver up to 45W of power over standard Ethernet cables. Operating from a 32V to 60V source, the device provides 802.3af powered-device discovery and classification and supports ac/dc load-disconnect detection methods. It integrates a nine-bit ADC and a three-wire serial interface that monitors and reports current levels drawn by each of the four ports. For flexibility, numerous programming and configuration options are available. The device is configurable for both endpoint and mid-span PSE applications and the controller's gate-charging current, current-limit threshold, startup timeout, over-current timeout, and auto-restart duty cycle are all programmable. Available in a 36-pin SSOP, pricing starts at $6.33 each/1,000. MAXIM INTEGRATED PRODUCTS, Sunnyvale, CA. (800) 998-8800.
