LDOs Output 250 mA With Wide Output Voltage Range

Handling input voltages up to 80 V, the LT3012 and LT3013 from Linear Technology have low dropout voltages of only 400 mV.

With a low dropout voltage of only 400 mV and the ability to deliver up to 250 mA of load current, the LT3012 and LT3013 micropower low-dropout regulators (LDOs) feature an input voltage capability up to 80 V. Their wide adjustable VOUT capability from 1.24 V to 60 V makes them ideal for automotive, 48-V telecom backup supplies, and industrial control applications. Additionally, their quiescent current—as low as 40 µA (operating) and 1 µA (shutdown)—make them an excellent choice for battery-powered memory "keep alive" systems that require extended run times. The LT3013 version includes a programmable Powergood flag feature that indicates output regulation.

The LDOs operate with very small, low-cost ceramic output capacitors. They are stable with only a 3.3 µF output capacitor, compared to older regulator devices of comparable output current and high voltage that require as much as 100 µF. Also, the external capacitors can be used without the series resistance that is needed with many other regulators. Internal protection circuitry includes reverse-battery protection, current limiting, thermal limiting, and reverse-current protection. For high-voltage applications that require large input-to-output differentials, the LT3012 and LT3013 offer a very compact and thermally effective solution. The thermally enhanced DFN and TSSOP packages provide thermal resistances comparable to much larger conventional packages. The LT3012EDE comes in a 12-lead, low-profile 3- by 4- by 0.75-mm DFN package, and LT3012EFE comes in a 16-lead thermally enhanced TSSOP package. The LT3013EDE and LT3013EFE are available in similar packages.
