Dual-Output DC-DC Converters Boast 95% Efficiency

June 23, 2006
TI’s 62400/62420 devices’ one-pin serial interface allow dynamic voltage scaling.

Two dual-output, step-down, dc-dc converters feature TI’s one-pin serial interface technology, which allows the devices to adjust the output voltage dynamically during operation. The converters boast a 95% efficiency at 2.25-MHz operation, which makes them well-suited for use in cell phones, portable media players, and other applications where battery life is an issue. The interface permits the converters to support dynamic voltage scaling when powering the TMS320C5000 digital signal processors and OMAP processors. The TPS62400 synchronous switcher with integrated FET technology supports up to 400 mA of output current on one channel and up to 600 mA on the second output over a voltage range of 2.5 to 6 V. The TPS62420 converter is optimized for portable industrial and medical equipment. It delivers up to 600 mA on the first output and 1000 mA on the second output. Both devices have a power-save mode at light-load current and can be placed in a shutdown mode that reduces power consumption to 1.2 microamps. The units feature 180-deg. out-of-phase operation and 1% output voltage accuracy in PWM mode. The come in 10-pin 3-mm by 3-mm QFN packages.
