Together, the ADP3168 and ADP3418 form an efficient multiphase synchronous buck switching regulator that fits Intel's VRD/VRM 10 power specifications. The devices can convert a 12-V main supply into the highly accurate core supply voltage required by Intel's next-generation processors. Temperature-compensated inductor current sensing provides high accuracy at low system cost. The ADP3168 reads the voltage identification (VID) code directly from the processor, then sets the output voltage between 0.8375 and 1.6 V. The Flex-mode pulse-width-modulation (PWM) architecture provides a stable, high-speed control loop. The loop drives the logic level outputs at up to 1 MHz per phase while meeting Intel's tough transient requirements with the fewest possible output capacitors. The phase relationship of the outputs can be programmed to provide two-, three-, or four-phase operation. Additional features include reliable short-circuit protection, adjustable current limiting, and a delayed Power Good output that accommodates on-the-fly output voltage changes requested by the CPU. Also, the ADP3418 provides the interface and high-current drive to control external power MOSFETs. The driver's output disable function enables controlled shutdown with no negative voltage spikes on the CPU power rail. The ADP3168 and ADP3418 are specified over the commercial temperature range of 0°C to 85°C. The ADP3168 is available in a 28-lead TSSOP package, and the ADP3418 comes in a 28-lead SO-8 package. The ADP3168 and ADP3418 are priced at $1.42 and $0.60 each, respectively, in 1000-unit quantities.
