Designed as a programmable, precision current source for tunable lasers, the ADN8810 current source drives various laser sections by scaling its output current for laser front mirror, back mirror, and gain while interfacing to the host system via a serial connection. The device is reported as the industry's first integrated current source in a lead frame chipscale package (LFCSP). An integrated 12-bit d/a converter can be programmed via a microcontroller to output a specific current value by writing to the chip's digital interface. Maximum output current can be programmed from 50 mA to 250 mA with an external resistor. The high current output of 250 mA is said to enable higher-power laser designs required for longer transmission distances. Available in production quantities in January 2003, price will be $8 each/1,000. For further information, contact ANALOG DEVICES, INC., Wilmington, MA. (800) 262-5643.
