A 2-phase, natural interleaving PFC controller, the UCC28060 promises to lower system cost, plus boost design flexibility and efficiency in 75W to 800W applications. Helping users exceed Energy Star and 80 Plus requirements, the device meets the most stringent power factor requirements for consumer systems. The Natural Interleaving technology is said to reduce the amount of I/O current ripple, distribute magnetics to improve thermal management, and provide light-load phase management. A ripple-cancellation feature significantly reduces ripple current compared to single-phase or alternative master-slave interleaved solutions. In addition, the feature allows a reduction in capacitor size by 27% and the use of smaller, less expensive EMI filters. Of note, the UCC28060 reportedly incorporates the industry’s first failsafe over-voltage protection circuit that provides dual paths of voltage sensing to protect against shorts to an intermediate voltage. Available in a 16-pin SOIC package, pricing is $1.30 each/1,000. TEXAS INSTRUMENTS INC., Dallas, TX. (800) 477-8924.
