In a micro SMD package consuming 1.26 mm x 1.56 mm of space, the LM3691 debuts as the industry’s smallest 1A, 4-MHz synchronous step-down dc/dc converter. Operating over an input voltage range from 2.3V to 5.5V, the device specifies a peak efficiency of 95% and an output voltage precision of ±1%. Its switching frequency up to 4 MHz enables the use of miniature 1-mH multilayer inductors and tiny 4.7-mF capacitors. Other features include a transient performance of ±40 mV and an integrated mode-control pin allows the selection of forced PWM mode or auto mode, which changes modes between gated PWM mode (ECO) and PWM automatically depending on the load. In ECO mode, quiescent current is 63 mA under light load conditions. Available now, price is $2.25 each/1,000. NATIONAL SEMICONDUCTOR CORP., Santa Clara, CA. (800) 272-9959.
