Introduced as the industry’s smallest and thinnest 500-mA step-down dc/dc converter, the TPS62601 measures 13 mm x 13 mm and 0.6-mm in height and achieves an efficiency up to 89% while consuming a typical operating current of 30 ?A. The synchronous, switch-mode device’s fixed frequency of 6 MHz allows the use of one 0.47-?H inductor with a height of 0.6 mm and two low-cost ceramic capacitors. Other features include an input-voltage range from 2.3V to 5.5V, a voltage-regulation accuracy of ±1.5%, 1.8V output, and support for numerous applications including memory modules, GPS modules, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi modules, and other wireless micro-modules used in thin smart phones, digital cameras, portable disk drives, and media players. To maximize battery run-time, the converter automatically enters a power-save mode during light-load conditions via an automatic pulse-frequency modulation and PWM switching feature. In shutdown mode, its current consumption pulls back to less than 1 ?A. Price is $1.45 each/1,000. TEXAS INSTRUMENTS INC., Dallas, TX. (800) 477-8924.
