The S-8209A/B Series is a protection IC for lithium-ion and lithium polymer rechargeable batteries and includes a high-accuracy voltage detection circuit and a delay circuit. This IC has a transmission function and two types of cell-balance function so that users are also able to configure a protection circuit with series multi-cell. Features include a high-accuracy voltage detection circuit that performs a number of functions, such as overcharge detection, cell-balance detection, and overdischarge detection. The IC provides a settable delay time through an external capacitor at the output. It also performs cell balancing for charging and discharging. The device operates from -40°C to 85°C and consumes 7 µA maximum. It comes in a small SNT-8A, 8-pin TSSOP and is lead-free. The A version provides a P-channel open drain output; the B version offers an N-channel open drain output. Applications include lithium-ion and lithium polymer rechargeable battery packs. Pricing for the S-8209 is $0.70 each in lots of 10,000. SEIKO INSTRUMENTS USA INC., Torrance, CA. (310) 517-7884.
