Battery Chargers Program Via SMBus

Feb. 18, 2011
The MAX17435 and MAX17535 SMBus battery chargers operate at 850 kHz and 500 kHz, respectively.

The MAX17435 and MAX17535 SMBus battery chargers operate at 850 kHz and 500 kHz, respectively. The SMBus interface enables programming of charge settings without changing external components. Programmable settings include charge current, charge voltage, input current limit, relearn voltage, and digital IINP voltage readback. Other shared features include a ±0.4% battery-voltage accuracy, ±3% charge-current accuracy using 10 m? sense resistors, an internal charge pump that drives the adapter n-channel MOSFETs when the adapter is present, and a p-channel MOSFET that selects the battery in the absence of an adapter. Available in 24-pin, 4 mm x 4 mm TQFN packages with an exposed backside pad, prices start at $6.43 each/1,000. MAXIM INTEGRATED PRODUCTS, Sunnyvale, CA. (800) 998-8800.
