Rugged Encapsulated DC-DC Modules Achieve 88% Efficiency

Jan. 23, 2014
The encapsulated design of Murata’s SPM low-power, isolated dc-dc modules suits them for electronic equipment subject to harsh environments: outdoor communications, applications with little or no forced-air cooling, smart grid, and industrial process control equipment.

The encapsulated design of Murata’s SPM low-power, isolated dc-dc modules suits them for electronic equipment subject to harsh environments: outdoor communications, applications with little or no forced-air cooling, smart grid, and industrial process control equipment. The SPM15 series targets applications that require input-voltage ranges of 9 to 36 V or 18 to 75 V at 15 W, while the SPM25 series fits those that need an input-voltage range of 36 to 75 V at 25 W. Both series provide single output voltages of 3.3, 5, or 12 V dc (the SPM15 has a 15-V dc option). The 25.4- by 25.4- by 10.41-mm, five-sided, shielded, encapsulated converters blend pulse-width-modulation technologies, assembly processes, and synchronous rectification techniques to attain energy efficiency ratings of 88%. Operating temperature ranges from −40 to +85°C. Basic insulation provides input-to-output isolation of 1600 V dc. Overcurrent, overtemperature, and undervoltage lockout protection is included.
