IC Optimizes Efficiency to Prevent Handset Overheating During Fast Charging

    April 12, 2016
Power Integrations' ChiPhy CHY103D is the first charger interface IC for off-line ac-dc chargers that is compatible with the Quick Charge 3.0 protocol from Qualcomm Technologies.

Fast charging of mobile devices requires more power than traditional charging, so handset overheating becomes a critical issue. Power Integrations' ChiPhy CHY103D is the first charger interface IC for off-line ac-dc chargers that is compatible with the Quick Charge (QC) 3.0 protocol from Qualcomm Technologies. It helps solve this challenge by improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the handset's charger circuitry.

Used alongside Power Integrations' InnoSwitch ac-dc switcher ICs, the CHY103D device incorporates all of the functions needed to support QC 3.0. The IC improves charging reduces heat dissipation in the handset by enabling voltage changes in 200 mV increments instead of the larger steps (e.g., from 5 volts to 9 or 12 volts). Small charger voltage steps allow the mobile device to optimize the supply voltage from the offline charger, minimizing losses in the phone's internal charge-management system. System designers can choose to charge handsets faster or reduce phone touch-temperature during charging.

The CHY103D IC itself consumes less than 1 mW at 5 V output and includes a wealth of protection features including Adaptive Output Overvoltage Protection (AOVP), Output Soft Short-circuit Protection (OSSP) and a Remote Shutdown Protection (RESP) feature.
