Bourns, Inc. announced the availability of two new high voltage Power Transient Voltage Suppressor (PTVS) devices, further expanding the line offered with SMD packaging to a total of 20 products. Featuring bidirectional port protection of 58 and 76 volts, the new PTVS devices meet stringent IEC 61000-4-5 8/20 µs current surge requirements in high-power DC clamping applications that include AC/DC power supplies exposed in outdoor environments and wireless base stations. Bourns designed its PTVS line with silicon-based technology that provides numerous advantages over typical competing MOV technology including lower clamping voltage under surge, greater performance stability and increased reliability.

Designs benefit from the new devices' SMD package, which delivers a reduction in peak clamping voltage compared to an equivalent through-hole device because of its lower lead inductance. The result is decreased electrical stress on the protected circuitry. SMD packaging can also reduce costs by eliminating the extra manufacturing step in designs where the PTVS diode is the only through-hole component on the printed circuit board. In addition, these new PTVS products offer an excellent surge response versus temperature; the typical maximum surge current at 150 °C exceeds 70 percent of their rated value at 25 °C.

Bourns’ latest PTVS products are RoHS compliant and available now. As a pricing reference, the Bourns’ Model PTVS6-058C-SH is priced at $ 21.56 each and Model PTVS6-076C-SH is priced at $23.51 each both in 20-piece quantities.
