Announced as the industry's smallest step-down dc/dc converters with an internal 24V P-channel MOSFET switch, the MAX1836/MAX1837 come in tiny 6-pin SOT23 packages. With the ability to make direct conversions from 24V inputs, the ICs eliminate the intermediate step-down voltage that wastes more than 15% of the battery life and increases circuit complexity. Direct conversion also eliminates compound efficiency losses caused by having to do an intermediate conversion from 24V to 5V and then from 5V to 3.3V. The MAX1836 delivers up to 250 mA and the MAX1837 delivers up to 125 mA. Both devices have an efficiency of 90% and a quiescent supply current of 12 µA. They also have current-limiting and over-temperature protection and operate over a temperature range from -40°C to 85°C. An evaluation kit is also available (MAX1836EVKIT). Pricing starts at $2.07 each.
