High-Current PMBus Converters Integrate MOSFETs

Texas Instruments says its SWIFT TPS544B20 and TPS544C20 are the first 18-V, 20- and 30-A synchronous dc-dc buck converters with a PMBus interface. Thanks to QFN packaging and integrated MOSFETs, the devices can drive ASICs in space-constrained and power-dense applications, including wired and wireless communications, enterprise and cloud computing, and data-storage systems. The converters feature 0.5% reference voltage accuracy and fully differential remote voltage sensing to meet voltage requirements of deep submicron processors. A selectable D-CAP or D-CAP2 adaptive on-time control mode accelerates load transient response and helps reduce external component count. The combination of programmability, real-time monitoring of output voltage, current and external temperature, and fault reporting via PMBus simplifies power-supply design and boosts reliability. Other features include soft-start, input undervoltage protection, and thermal shutdown.
