Proposed EPA Computer Spec Rewards Greater Efficiency

June 6, 2013
The EPA has published a draft of its ENERGY STAR Computer specification which includes extra incentives for computer manufacturers to use more efficient power supplies.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently published Draft 3, Version 6.0 of its ENERGY STAR Computer specification which includes extra incentives for computer manufacturers to use more efficient power supplies.

The new draft contains the typical standard of tightening Typical Energy Consumption (TEC) levels, but with an easier way to meet them: by shipping the product with a more efficient power supply than required. The maximum allowable TEC take’s the computer’s basics into consideration (memory, size, integrated displays, etc.) and now, a new allowance for a “higher than required” power supply efficiency.

The EPA aims to publish Version 6 by the end of the first quarter, with it going into effect before the end of 2013.
