The market for third generation solar technology is expected to see some conservative growth with the dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) segment, forecasted to reach $130 million by 2023, according to market research company, IDTechEx.
Initial uses for DSSCs have included indoor, portable products such as solar chargers and wireless keyboards, but that is only the tip of the proverbial iceberg. Developers hope to include the inexpensive cells into a wider variety of larger installations, such as bus shelters, steel roofing, and other facades.
Although the application of DSSCs in portable devices will remain popular, the opportunity to expand is reported as the cause for the expected growth. The implementation of DSSCs could even be used in photovoltaics (PV) for developing countries in need of cost-effective energy solutions.
