Board test, inspection, and programming get boost

April 29, 2013. GOEPEL electronic has recently announced several electrical test and inspection capabilities aimed at printed-circuit boards and board-resident programmable devices. The enhanced offerings include an AOI system, an inline test and programming system, and a desktop tester and programmer.

At the SMT Hybrid Packaging conference held April 16-18, 2013, in Nuremberg, Germany, GOEPEL electronic highlighted its OptiCon THT-Line AOI system, which enables THT (through-hole technology) component and solder-joint-side inspection at several positions in a production line. The OptiCon AOI system features multispectral illumination, incorporates CCD cameras, and includes freely configurable inspection functions and illumination capabilities.

In addition to THT components and solder joints, the system can inspect wave-soldered SMD components. PCBs in carriers can be loaded into the system manually or by way of an accumulating transport system.

The system software, OptiCon PILOT version 5.3, is an integral part of the OptiCon THT-Line. It can, for example, check polarity of electrolytic capacitors and read labels without a prior learning process.

At the same event, GOEPEL introduced an additional another RAPIDO series inline production system for in-system programming and board test based on the company's Embedded System Access (ESA) technologies. The new model, the RPS3000-S32XL, supports multiboard panels measuring up to 500 X 500 mm. Based on an enhanced SCANFLEX architecture with Short Wire Interface for up to 32 sites, it supports double-sided probing for up to 3000 nails.

The RPS3000-S32XL provides in-system programming of nonvolatile flash memories, microcontrollers, and programmable logic devices (PLD). The system allows programming to be combined with test strategies such as boundary scan, processor emulation, chip-embedded instrumentation, or functional test. These procedures can be executed in parallel on 32 boards integrated into one panel.

Specifically addressing electrical test and ESA, GOEPEL has added a number of new features for its JULIET desktop tester series. The systems now support all of the company's ESA technologies for high-speed in-system programming of flash, PLD, and MCU devices as well as structural and functional at-speed board test. In addition to traditional boundary scan, JULIET supports test strategies such as processor emulation and chip embedded instrumentation based on the company's VarioTAP and ChipVORX technologies.

JULIET offers several innovations for system operations: universal adaptors for fast prototype adaption, an automated release mechanism, and a pneumatic lock mechanism. Furthermore, all JULIET systems provide the same user interface as the RAPIDO in-line programmers.
