As the latest standard for Power over Ethernet is released and incorporated, it will be increasingly important to include proper circuit protection in designs to ensure adequate protection and compatibility among equipment. Although the standards typically include overcurrent protection specifications, these PoE systems are also threatened by electrical transients that would be observed in any other power equipment. In addition, as electronics become more power hungry, there has been a simultaneous push to reduce the form factor of communication systems electronics that has impacted designs beginning at the fundamental level of integrated circuit geometries. Because electronics and telecommunication equipment have become inherently more sensitive, smaller and power hungry to meet users’ demands, it is even more important to include adequate surge protection in the design. This paper will explain how Bourns has prepared for the shift to the new standard with its cutting edge circuit protection products.
