A few CompactDAQ modules

National Instrument's new NI cDAQ-9188 chassis expands the NI CompactDAQ line with Gigabit Ethernet connectivity. The eight slot chassis (Fig. 1) accepts plug in modules that can then stream information across the network.

The NI cDAQ-9188 supports the Zero Configuration Networking (Zeroconf) standard. Zeroconf supports local addressing, multicast DNS, and DNS Service Discovery. Local addressing uses automatic IP addressing when there is no DHCP server. Multicast DNS (mDNS) provides automatic resolution and distribution of hostnames when there is no DNS server. The DNS Service Discovery (DNS-SD) addresses automatic discovery of network services like data acquisition.

The NI CompactDAQ chassis implements NI's patented Signal Streaming technology. When combined with the new high-speed C Series modules (Fig. 2), the system can continuously acquire up to 1 Msamples/s of simultaneous 16-bit data on each of four channels. The NI-DAQmx driver software uses a double-buffered transfer mechanism between the chassis and host computer.

The chassis can be one of many within a system. It can also be mixed with other data acquisition systems linked to the host using USB, wireless and buses such as PCI Express, PXI and PXI Express. NI CompactDAQ software support includes National Instrument's LabVIEW, C/C++, C#, and Microsoft Visual Basic .NET.
