Talking About AI—The Good, Bad, and Ugly

The continued growth in the importance and reach of advanced electronic systems in business and the global population makes every decision about technology deployment important on multiple levels. When it comes to the latest agent of disruptive change — artificial intelligence — a lot is happening at an engineering level, at a societal level, and at an individual level. It's the next big tool, as it were.
When it comes to the realm of electronics engineering, designing, and manufacturing, one could say that we’re really dealing with completely different aspects of AI, namely generative and agentic. One of the big problems in the debate over AI is that many people don't really understand the difference between the various facets of AI that they're talking about.
In this podcast, two of our editors, Bill Wong and Alix Paultre, discuss the current AI ecosystem and some of the issues involved in its expansion into the engineering community. They also talk about some of the new AI-driven design tools now available.

An Army veteran, Alix Paultre was a signals intelligence soldier on the East/West German border in the early ‘80s, and eventually wound up helping launch and run a publication on consumer electronics for the US military stationed in Europe. Alix first began in this industry in 1998 at Electronic Products magazine, and since then has worked for a variety of publications in the embedded electronic engineering space. Alix currently lives in Wiesbaden, Germany.

I earned a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology and a Masters in Computer Science from Rutgers University. I still do a bit of programming using everything from C and C++ to Rust and Ada/SPARK. I do a bit of PHP programming for Drupal websites. I have posted a few Drupal modules.
