Penguin Solutions is an interesting company when it comes to compute and storage. At one end of the spectrum is its SMARTsemi brand with DRAM, SD cards, and flash storage devices that are used in a range of embedded applications from CREE LED. At the other is Stratus Technologies with its fault-tolerant data center solution. Penguin Solutions is also involved with technologies like Compute Express Link (CXL) storage.

I talked with Philip Pokorny, Penguin Solutions’ Chief Technology Officer, about the various technologies and the history of the company. Philip has some fascinating insights and experiences, including working on Linux.

I earned a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology and a Masters in Computer Science from Rutgers University. I still do a bit of programming using everything from C and C++ to Rust and Ada/SPARK. I do a bit of PHP programming for Drupal websites. I have posted a few Drupal modules.

I still get a hand on software and electronic hardware. Some of this can be found on our Kit Close-Up video series. You can also see me on many of our TechXchange Talk videos. I am interested in a range of projects from robotics to artificial intelligence.

Philip Pokorny, CTO of Penguin Solutions, is responsible for defining the Penguin Computing product line. At Cummins Electronics, he contributed to internal network standards and open-source projects including the Linux kernel. He earned a BS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, and Mathematics from the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.
