Programming Safety and Security in the Age of AI
What you’ll learn:
- Why secure and safe software development isn’t something you add.
- How AI is and is not being used for software development.
Artificial-intelligence and machine-learning (AI/ML) tools have changed how software is designed and tested. However, developing safe and secure software that must meet safety requirements, e.g., ISO 26262 and DO-179C, or security standards such as ISO/IEC 27001 goes much further than applying those tools.
In this episode, I talk with Chuck Brokish, Director of Automotive Business Development at Green Hills Software, about developing safe and secure software and how AI may come into play. Tools like static analysis remain the basis for the development process and standards such as MISRA C/C++ can be checked using static analysis. AI is able to provide suggestions for finding and fixing errors, but it’s not always reliable in enforcing standards.

I earned a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology and a Masters in Computer Science from Rutgers University. I still do a bit of programming using everything from C and C++ to Rust and Ada/SPARK. I do a bit of PHP programming for Drupal websites. I have posted a few Drupal modules.
I still get a hand on software and electronic hardware. Some of this can be found on our Kit Close-Up video series. You can also see me on many of our TechXchange Talk videos. I am interested in a range of projects from robotics to artificial intelligence.
