Offered in SPDIP, SOIC, SSOP, and QFN packages, the ENC28J60 is claimed as the industry’s first 28-pin, stand-alone 10 Base-T Ethernet controller. The device integrates an IEEE 802.3-compliant 10 Mb/s Ethernet physical layer (PHY) and media access controller (MAC). Other features include special filters including a programmable pattern-matching filter that automatically evaluates, accepts, or rejects Magic Packet, unicast, multicast, or broadcast packet types, a 10 Mb/s SPI interface, and 8 KB of programmable, dual-port SRAM. Additionally, the chip comes with a TCP/IP stack, which is optimized for the company’s 8-bit PIC 18 microcontrollers, at no extra charge. Development support is by way of the PICtail Ethernet interface board (part #AC164121), which plugs into a selection of standard PICDEM demonstration boards. MICROCHIP TECHNOLOGY INC., Chandler, AZ.
