Offered as a derivative of the 68HC908MR32 and optimized to reduce power consumption in motor control systems, the 68HC908MR8 microcontroller (MCU) extends the reliability and data retention of its flash memory to typically 100,000 write/erase cycles with a 50-year data retention at 55°C. The flash memory can encode 64 bytes in 2 ms and an entire array in as little as 1s. The device eliminates the need for separate EEPROM devices in embedded systems that require non-volatile storage of temporary or changing data. Other features include PWM modules optimized for motor control, A/D converters, on-board voltage regulation, asynchronous serial communications interfaces (SCIs), and a synchronous serial interface (SPI). In addition, the MCU provides PWM waveform distortion correction, multiple fault inputs, and stop clock detection. Available in 28-pin PDIP, 32-pin QFP, and 28-pin SOIC packages, the new flash MCU is priced at $3.60 each/1,000. MOTOROLA INC., Austin, TX. (512) 895-2000.
