Addressing the challenges of S/PDIF audio transfers in LCD televisions, PC motherboards, hi-fi, and other audio systems, the WM8804 and WM8805 transceivers integrate a PLL with an intrinsic jitter period of 50 ps and jitter rejection frequency of 100 Hz. Both are capable of suppressing jitter on the audio signal at frequencies above 100 Hz, removing any unwanted distortion or problems. Another benefit of the PLL is the reduction in component count for the overall system. It can also synthesize crystal clock signals and, without an external filter, operate as a master timing source. Compliant with the IEC60958-3 standard for S/PDIF including a unique with-flags mode, the transceivers can extract status and error information via a variety of methods. The WM8804 provides one input and one output while the WM8805 offers eight inputs and one output. Sampling now, prices for the WM8804 in a 20-pin SSOP and WM8805 in a 28-pin SSOP are $2.28 and $2.71 each/10,000, respectively. WOLFSON MICROELECTRONICS PLC, San Diego, CA. (858) 676-5090.
