10GE Devices Shorten Time-To-Market For Carrier Ethernet Equipment

Carrier Ethernet, the networking service created and sponsored by the Metro Ethernet Forum, is rapidly extending the ubiquitous Ethernet local-area network (LAN) into the metropolitan-area network (MAN) and wide-area network (WAN) space. Carrier service providers continue to migrate away from traditional Sonet/SDH services to lower-cost 10-Gbit/s Ethernet (10GE). But it isn’t easy to do. Applied Micro Circuits Corp. (AMCC) is making that faster and easier with its Yahara product family.

The Yahara line is designed for telecom OEMs making 10-Gbit/s Optical Transport Unit-2 (OTU-2) transponder and regenerator line cards. This line of chips integrates 10GE and 10-Gbit/s Fibre Channel (FC)/8G FC/OC-192/STM-64 to OUT-2 mapping services, FracN clock synthesizing circuitry, electronic dispersion compensation (EDC), GFEC/Enhanced FEC, and 10G serializer/deserializer (SERDES) functions.

The S10123 targets 10G OTU-2 client/line tributary Metro Ethernet and switch/router applications. The system interface supports XAUI/SFI4.P2/SFI-5s protocols and enables the direct connection to network processors, 10GE switches, 10G framers, and 10G media access controllers (MACs). Yahara’s 10G line XFI interface provides direct connection to SFP and SFP+ optical modules. This combination of features allows OEMs to realize power, space and cost savings with the elimination of external physical layers (PHYs). The S10123 comes in a 19- by 19-mm plastic ball-grid array (BGA) package.

The S10124 provides a set of interfaces for multi-service transport and dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) platforms. A XAUI/SFI4.P2/SFI-5s system interface and a dedicated 10G XFI line interface support a separate and dedicated 10G XFI client interface as well as a 16-bit parallel SFI4.P1 interface, providing flexibility for use on either the client or line side of the device.

The S10124 is ideal for 10G OTU-2 client/line tributary cards as well as transponder and regenerator applications, and it supports 10G XFP/SFP+ and 10G MSA modules. Its interfaces enable customers to enhance differentiating features such as encryption and unique mappings. As a result, telecom OEMs can support both future and legacy carrier optical network requirements. The S10124 comes in a 25- by 25-mm plastic BGA package.

The S10126 is designed for the optical networking industry’s continuing migration to small form factor serial 10G optical modules and 10G serial backplanes. It is packaged in a 19- by 19-mm plastic BGA package and supports two serial 10G interfaces that are XFP/SFP+ module-compliant, enabling a small-footprint solution for 10G Transponder applications, serial 10G backplane applications, and 10x100G muxponder applications.

The Yahara family supports a 10G GMP mapping mode that enables 10G Client signals to be mapped into a generic ODU-2 frame at a common clock rate that can feed a 100G muxponder device. This mapping feature ideally suits the S10126 device with its two 10G XFI interfaces, as it provides an extremely clean and easily routable interface to both the client-side XFP/SFP+ optic module and to the 100G muxponder device.

Also, with integrated ITU G.709 FEC and AMCC’s Enhanced FEC (ITU G.975.1.I4), the Yahara family enables metro and long-haul transmission of 10GE over optical transport networks (OTNs) in low-OSNR (optical signal-to-noise ratio) environments. In addition, the GFEC and AMCC’s Enhanced FEC features compensate for channel impairments, enabling narrow channel spacing of 25 GHz for DWDM systems.
