Wi-Fi transceivers are finding themselves in more portable and mobile equipment every day. A prime target is cell phones where VoIP over Wi-Fi is becoming more common. To address this growing need, STMicroelectronics is offering its STLC4420 transceiver that covers both the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands and fully compatible with 802.11a/b/g standards. The design includes intelligent power management that greatly reduces not only talk time power but also down time with a super low consumption sleep mode. The chip is designed for embedding Wi-Fi into cell phones, Wi-Fi phones, PDAs, laptops, and cameras. Its ultra small package (8 x 8.5 x 1.4 mm) makes it easy to include.

A version for just the 802.11b/g standard called the STLC4550 is also available.
