Promising significant reductions in power and cost to passive-optical-network equipment makers, the MAX3886 multi-rate clock/data recovery (CDR) serializer/deserializer (SerDes) delivers data rates up to 2.488 Gb/s and integrates the functions of three ICs. The device employs the company's proprietary CDR technology that allows the chip to use either a 19.44-MHz, SMD-type crystal resonator or an external LVCMOS source as a frequency reference. Its upstream rate is configurable to be equal to the downstream rate (symmetric operation) or as a sub multiple of the downstream rate (asymmetric operation). The MAX3886 operates from a 3.3V supply and over a temperature range from -40°C to +85°C. Available in a 56-pin TQFN package measuring 8 mm x 8 mm, price starts at $9.97 each/1,000.
