Launched as the wireless market's first complete single-chip IEEE 802.11g WLAN solution, the AR5005G integrates a media access controller (MAC), baseband processor, and a 2.4-GHz radio in a CMOS design. Additionally, several discrete components are also included, yielding what is said to be a 35% lower parts count when compared to currently available chipsets. The device relies on a unique multi-phase approach to signal processing, which extends battery life by controlling power in different sections of the wireless product, based on the level of system and network activity. Including Cisco Compatible Extensions (CCX), it supports the latest WLAN security standards, including Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA and WPA2) and 802.11i enhanced security via the advanced encryption standard (AES). The AR5005G is sampling now with volume production expected in the second quarter. Pricing is $12 each/10,000. ATHEROS COMMUNICATIONS INC., Sunnyvale, CA. (408) 773-5200.
