Speeding up metro area networks (MANs) is a high priority in today's bandwidth-hungry environment, making it important to accelerate the deployment of high-speed optical networks. Aiding in that quest is the VCat-10 (MTC6210), a 10-Gbps SONET/SDH mapper/framer that supports the Generic Framing Protocol (GFP), Virtual Concatenation (VC), and Link Capacity Adjustment Scheme (LCAS). These utilities permit more efficient data transport, increase the flexibility of VC by allowing dynamic reconfiguration of VC groups, and provide for features such as graceful degradation and time-of-day services. Produced using 0.13 µm CMOS and featuring a 1.5V core, 2.5V DDR SDRAM I/O and 3.3V LVTTL I/O, the device includes industry-standard layer 2 processing capabilities, including GFP, ATM, Packet-over SONET (PoS), and Link Access Procedure_SDH (LAPS). GFP and PoS/LAPS processing is increasingly important for the transport of gigabit Ethernet over next-generation SONET/SDH equipment, such as multi-service provisioning platforms (MSPPs) and edge-grooming switches. And ATM and PoS processing allows routers and multi-service switches to more effectively route data traffic over the legacy SONET/SDH infrastructure. MULTILINK TECHNOLOGY CORP., Somerset, NJ.
