0.8-mm-Pitch BGA Socket Features Under-0.1-dB Insertion Loss

Sept. 15, 2014
Ironwood Electronics’ SG-BGA-6410 socket, a ball-grid-array (BGA) socket for 0.8-mm-pitch, 96-pin BGA ICs—operates at bandwidths up to 8 GHz with less than 1 dB of insertion loss.

Ironwood Electronics’ SG-BGA-6410 socket, a ball-grid-array (BGA) socket for 0.8-mm-pitch, 96-pin BGA ICs—operates at bandwidths up to 8 GHz with less than 1 dB of insertion loss. Designed for 8- by 14-mm, 7.5- by 13-mm, 9- by 13-mm, and 9- by 6-mm package sizes, the socket dissipates up to several watts without extra heatsinking, and can handle up to 100 W with a custom heatsink. Typical contact resistance is 20 mΩ per pin. The socket, which connects all pins with 8-GHz bandwidth, solderlessly mounts on the printed-circuit board uses a footprint that measures only 2.5 mm more on each side. Its shoulder-screw and swivel-lid construction incorporates a quick insertion method for fast IC change-out. Operating temperature ranges from –35 to +100°C. Pin self-inductance equals 0.15 nH; mutual inductance is 0.025 nH. Capacitance to ground is 0.01 pF, and current capacity comes in at 2 A per pin.
