CMOS Sensor Rivals CCDs

Nov. 9, 2004
Introduced as the industry?s first small-scale, 5-Mpixel CMOS image sensor, the OV5610 reportedly delivers the image quality of more expensive charge coupled devices (CCDs), which promises to reduce the cost of high-resolution digital still cameras.

Introduced as the industry?s first small-scale, 5-Mpixel CMOS image sensor, the OV5610 reportedly delivers the image quality of more expensive charge coupled devices (CCDs), which promises to reduce the cost of high-resolution digital still cameras. The sensor employs 2.775-µm pixels, allowing for an optical format (footprint) measuring 1" x 1.8" in a CLCC package. It integrates a 2,592 x 1,944 image array and a 10-bit a/d converter capable of operating at up to 4 fps in full resolution (QSXGA). A unique sensor technology relies on advanced algorithms to cancel fixed pattern noise, eliminate smearing, reduce blooming, and virtually eliminate dark current.
