Ramping up for next-generation mobile phones and PDAs, the AT77C104B chip-like, fingerprint sensor claims to minimize the cost and integration concerns of biometric alternatives. The sensor integrates eight-way navigation and click functions for menu scrolling and item selection to eliminate the need for mechanical navigation modules. Upon installation, the sensor area consumes just 1.6 mm x 9.5 mm of enclosure real estate. Via proprietary technology that allows for sweeping a finger across the sensor, users can expect a fingerprint resolution of 500 dpi. The component operates over a voltage range from 2.3V to 3.6V, drawing a maximum of 6 mA during acquisition and less than 10 µA in sleep mode. Depending on packaging options, pricing starts at less than $6 each in high volume. ATMEL CORP., San Jose, CA. (408) 441-0311.
