This new light-to-voltage converter integrates a photodiode, op amp and feedback components on a single monolithic IC. The TSL257 chip reportedly can measure very low levels of light with significantly increased accuracy without sacrificing speed.

This new light-to-voltage converter integrates a photodiode, op amp and feedback components on a single monolithic IC. The TSL257 chip reportedly can measure very low levels of light with significantly increased accuracy without sacrificing speed.
A unique architecture is said to give this device a high level of sensitivity, or responsivity to light, that provides 320 Megaohms of transimpedance gain while maintaining a 160-µs rise time. The optical converter is well-suited for use in smoke, mark and color detection applications, as well as in proximity sensors and ambient light systems for color control. Supplied in a three-lead, clear plastic sidelooker package with an integral lens, the device costs $0.77 each/1,000.
