Enhancing the company's family of intelligent infrared, non-contact thermometers, the MLX90614xAC narrow the field of view to 35°. Previous versions specify a 90° view field and target air conditioning and room heater applications. The narrower field is the result of adding a view-angle-limiting metal tube to the standard TO-39 housing of the MLX90614. Calibrating the thermometer after attaching this tube ensures consistent accuracy. The component consists of the sensing element in the form of a silicon chip with a thin, micro-machined membrane sensitive to the infrared radiation of a distant object, and a custom signal-conditioning chip that amplifies and digitizes the signal from the membrane and calculates the object temperature via pre-set calibration. It also relies on low noise amplifiers, a 17-bit ADC, and a DSP unit in its signal-conditioning chip. Operating temperature range is from -40°C to +125°C and object temperature range is from -70°C to +380°C. Other features include a temperature resolution of 0.02°C, and an absolute accuracy of ±0.5°C in the object temperature range of 0°C to +50°C and ±1°C outside that range.
