Delta-Sigma Modulator Offers Full Differential Inputs

Oct. 1, 1998

Designed for use in high-resolution measurement applications in industrial process controls and portable instrumentation, the ADS1201, a 130-dB dynamic range delta-sigma modulator, achieves 24-bit A/D conversion to provide extremely precise measurements. Full differential inputs and high-resolution signal conversion make this device well-suited as a direct transducer interface for pressure, temperature, flow, weigh scales, motor controls, and force measurement systems. The device provides a serial data stream that's synchronized to the clock output. This serial stream can be fed directly to a digital filter to complete the A/D converter function. As a result, designers can tailor the digital filter characteristics without compromising the high bit-rate conversion and provides a low clock rate for the clock and serial data stream. The low clock rate does not require expensive optically-coupled isolation.
