Motion Processor Improves Motor Stability

Sept. 1, 1999

Capable of improving brushless motor stability by directly providing sinusoidal commutation, MC1231A high-speed processor performs software-based commutation to reduce torque ripple, oscillation, overshoot and audible noise level, resulting in smoother motion. For applications sensitive to motor disturbances such as direct drive brushless uses, the processor receives incremental quadrature encoder signals for inputs and provides outputs of sinusoidally commutated motor signals appropriate for driving two- and three-phase brushless motors. By performing the sinusoidal commutation, the processor reduces the cost of the motor amplifier. The processor includes S-curve, trapezoidal or velocity profiling modes, trajectory generation and PID with velocity feedforward filter.
