Varistors Hit The Road

June 2, 2005
Designed for 12V, 24V, and 42V automotive systems, the AV Series single and multi-layer varistors are available in 0805 to 3225 case sizes with single pulse peak current ratings from 120A to 2 kA (8/20 μs waveform). Single-pulse transient energy

Designed for 12V, 24V, and 42V automotive systems, the AV Series single and multi-layer varistors are available in 0805 to 3225 case sizes with single pulse peak current ratings from 120A to 2 kA (8/20 μs waveform). Single-pulse transient energy spikes range from 0.3 to 17 Joules (10/1,000 μs waveform). They come in surface mount versions that are said to require significantly less space and specify greater response times than typical silicon TVS diodes. Through-hole versions are also available that employ round and square-shaped designs to improve transient energy absorption. Applications for the AV Series include antilock braking systems, direct ignition, airbag controls, and windshield wiper motors. Pricing for surface-mount and through-hole components are $0.25 and $0.35 each/1,000, respectively. STACKPOLE ELECTRONICS INC., Raleigh, NC. (919) 850-9500.
