I talked with Vuzix CEO Paul Travers about the uses and implementation of augmented-reality glasses. We also discussed the company's new M400 series. The M400 is a rugged, IP67-rated system designed for industrial use (see figure). It has a 16.8-degree field of view. An eight-core, 2.52-GHz Qualcomm XR1 system-on-chip (SoC) provides the intelligence for the system. The SoC has access to 64 GB of flash memory and 6 GB of LPDDR4 DRAM.

The M400 has built-in GPS, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth support. There are navigation buttons plus a two-axis touchpad. However, voice control is usually more convenient, allowing for hands-free operation. The system incorporates a 4K, 30-frame/s, auto-focus camera. The unit can be mounted in front of either the left or right eye.

Head-tracking support is provided by a 3-axis gyro, 3-axis accelerometer, and a 3-axis magnetic compass. Also included are three noise-cancelling microphones and an integrated speaker. The system can be mounted on glasses as well as on hard hats and headbands.
