The WiMedia Alliance (www.wimedia.org) has registered four physical layer chipsets (PHYs) from three companies supporting both WiMedia band group 1 (3.168 - 4.752 GHz) and band group 3 (6.336 - 7.920 GHz), marking the first registration of WiMedia-based devices operating above 6 GHz, and providing the groundwork for continued adoption of WiMedia Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology. WiMedia band groups above 6 GHZ are suited for mobile UWB applications.
The dual-band PHYs are from member companies Alereon, Inc., Intel Corporation and Realtek Semiconductor Corporation. Samsung Electronics registered one PHY operating in band group 1. These registrations bring the total number of WiMedia-approved PHYs to 21.
PHY registration is a prerequisite for obtaining full Platform Certification, the final stage of the WiMedia Alliance's compliance and interoperability testing for its Ultra-Wideband (UWB) Common Radio Platform.
