E-Bike Employs Pedal-by-Wire for a Better Ride

Also’s TM-B e-bike has a disconnect between the rear wheel and the pedals

What you’ll learn

  • What is pedal-by-wire (PBW)
  • Why is Also’s TM-B bike different from conventional e-bikes

Matt Liddle, Director of Physical Experience at Also, highlights their TM-B e-Bike (watch the video above), a class 3 e-bike. One of the main features is the Dreamride system that implements a peddle-by-wire (PBW) system built using Nordic Semiconductor power components. This means the pedals are not directly connected to the rear wheel like most systems. Instead, they power a generator. The rear wheel is driven by a motor. A battery system sits between the two. This provides a very smooth and finely tuned riding experience.

The TM-B has a 100-mile battery range. The battery is easily to remove allowing quick swaps. Like most e-bikes, it has regenerative braking.

It has a 10x power assist and can drive the e-bike to speeds up to 28 mph. It can handle a 30 percent grade and it can deliver 0.3 G acceleration with a 180 nm of torque.

The bike has a 2.75-in, circular touch display on the handle bars. It also has a quick change feature for the top frame with the seat allowing quick swaps for different people or to add seats with different features like a backseat. Of course, there is an app for that which can be used to lock and unlock the bike as well as track the bike’s status.

Also moreover makes other electronic transportation systems like the TM-Q. This is a four wheeled vehicle designed for commercial cargo.

I earned a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology and a Masters in Computer Science from Rutgers University. I still do a bit of programming using everything from C and C++ to Rust and Ada/SPARK. I do a bit of PHP programming for Drupal websites. I have posted a few Drupal modules.

I still get a hand on software and electronic hardware. Some of this can be found on our Kit Close-Up video series. You can also see me on many of our TechXchange Talk videos. I am interested in a range of projects from robotics to artificial intelligence.
