Geneva, Switzerland: STMicroelectronics (ST) and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) shook hands on a licensing deal whereby ST will deliver next-generation graphics technology for mobile multimedia devices. The licensing agreement will combine ST’s Nomadik platform with the 3D graphics core technology from AMD’s Handheld Division, which was formerly part of ATI Technologies.

ST licensed AMD’s OpenGL ES 2.0-compliant 3D and OpenVG 1.0 vector graphics core engine and related software. Design teams from AMD and ST will work together to integrate AMD’s unified shader-based technology into Nomadik devices for the next generation of high-end feature phones, smartphones, and other portable multimedia devices. The anticipated outcome of combining Nomadik and AMD graphic technology is considerably improved image quality and longer battery life.
