MAX4004/MAX4006 precision, high-side sensing current monitors are designed for measuring PIN photodiode current in fiber applications. Operating from a 2.7-V to 22-V supply, they are available in the -40°C to 85°C extended temperature range.

The output levels produce a signal proportional to the reference current monitored. The MAX4006 offers an internally trimmed 10 kilohm resistor, providing 1 V/mA of voltage proportional to the reference current. With no internal resistor, the MAX4004 provides an output current response of 10:1. The MAX4004/MAX4006 have four decades of dynamic range and sense reference current of 250 nA to 2.5 mA with better than 10% guaranteed accuracy over the entire temperature range. Reference current is monitored from 10 nA to 10mA with reduced accuracy.

These current monitors are ideal for small form factor (SFF), pluggable fiber modules using PIN photodiodes and low-voltage APD photo diodes requiring high-accuracy measurements at 1 mA or below.

The MAX4004/MAX4006 also feature an internal current-limiting circuit to 20 mA, which protects against short-circuit-to-ground conditions. The output monitor pin is clamped to protect the connecting circuitry from overvoltage conditions. They are available in the 6-pin SOT23 and 8-pin QFN packages.
