Micrel Inc., a provider of power, connect and protect IC solutions, intends to acquire the ISO/TS16949:2002 certification, a key milestone for working with major automotive customers. ISO/TS16949:2002 is an ISO technical specification that aligns existing American (QS-9000), German (VDA6.1), French (EAQF) and Italian (AVSQ) automotive quality systems standards.

The company’s announcement is reflective of its strategy to increase product presence in the global automotive market and expand existing relationships with key automotive manufacturers. In January 2005, Micrel announced that its wafer fabrication facility has been certified to ISO14001:1996, the International Environmental Management System Standard.

The company’s ISO14001:1996 certification was issued Dec. 14, 2004, after an audit by TUV America. The goal of the environmental management system is to ensure regulatory compliance and to reduce environmental impact through waste reduction and recycling. Micrel plans to be audit ready for ISO/TS16949:2002 certification by the end of 2005.

Micrel’s load-dump protected high-voltage LDO regulators and RF products have already been utilized in various automotive applications including remote keyless entry systems.
