April 17, 2014. Intel Labs Vice President and Director of Integrated Computing Research (ICR) Dr. Vida Ilderem will serve as plenary session speaker on Monday, June 2, 2014, at the IEEE MTT-S 2014 International Microwave Symposium (IMS), marking the first female plenary speaker in the history of IMS.
Dr. Ilderem’s opening keynote, “How Data, Devices, and Personalization are Fueling Demand for Innovation,” will focus on the growing intelligence of everyday objects and the technology required to create a digitized world where everything is connected. From smart cars to refrigerators to parking meters, users increasingly expect a high level of personalization and interaction with devices, and industry and academic professionals need to innovate faster than ever to keep up with these increasingly sophisticated expectations.
“Dr. Ilderem’s innovative contributions and thought leadership around the Internet of Things make for a timely and important discussion as we propel ourselves into an increasingly connected world,” said Larry Dunleavy, IMS2014 symposium general chair. “Women play a vital role in both the history and future of the microwave industry, and Dr. Ilderem is a prime example of these important achievements by women across the fields of science and technology.”
In her position as the director of the Integrated Computing Research [ICR] for Intel Corp., Dr. Ilderem explores the next revolution in computing with a focus on breakthrough technology innovations for seamless connection, highly integrated small form factors, and the enablement of the Internet of Things. Prior to joining Intel in 2009, Dr. Ilderem served as vice president of systems and technology research at Motorola's Applied Research and Technology Center. She holds a doctorate in electrical engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and has 27 issued patents.
Continuing the spotlight on women’s contributions to engineering, University of California, Davis Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi will lead the keynote session on Friday, June 6 at the IEEE 2014 Wireless and Microwave Technology Conference (WAMICON), which is co-located with IMS as part of Microwave Week. In addition to her role as chancellor, Dr. Katehi also holds faculty appointments in electrical and computer engineering and in women and gender studies. A member of the National Academy of Engineering, she previously chaired the president’s committee for the National Medal of Science and the secretary of commerce’s committee for the National Medal of Technology and Innovation. She is also a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Dr. Katehi’s work in electronic circuit design has led to numerous national and international awards both as a technical leader and educator, 19 U.S. patents, and several additional U.S. patent applications. She is the author or co-author of 10 book chapters and more than 650 refereed publications in journals and symposia proceedings. She earned her bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the National Technical University of Athens in 1977, and her master’s and doctoral degrees in electrical engineering from University of California, Los Angeles in 1981 and 1984, respectively.
The symposium will also feature a special reception for women in microwaves at the Tampa History Museum on Tuesday, June 3 at 6 p.m. Attendees can meet with old friends as well as make new connections to the growing community of women who make a career in the field of high-technology.
“The WIM reception is an important opportunity to foster friendships and form connections with like-minded women in similar technical roles,” said Sherry Hess, longtime IEEE member and IMS social media chair. “These connections build bridges across industry and academia and encourage relationships between people new to the industry and seasoned veterans.”
IMS2014 will be held June 1-6, 2014 in Tampa and include a full schedule of 160 technical sessions and more than 575 exhibitors. As the centerpiece of Microwave Week 2014, IMS2014 will also share the stage with the RFIC Symposium, ARFTG Conference and WAMICON.
