Three new ICs provide design engineers of SONET and SDH transmission systems, optical networking equipment, DWDM, ATM networking, and digital cross-connect systems with reduced power, board space, cost, and development time for 2.5-Gbit/s applications. All three 2.5-Gbit ICs operate at 3.3 V and meet Bellcore's jit-ter performance requirements.

The VSC8131 and VSC8132 chip set provides 32-bit OC-48/STM-16 multiplexer/demultiplexer functions. The VSC8131 32:1 multiplexer has an integrated clock generator with an internal phase-locked loop (PLL) that provides a 2.5-GHz clock output from a low-speed reference clock for optical transmission equipment. The companion VSC8132 1:16 demultiplexer deserializes a 2.5-Gbit/s data stream into a 32-bit wide 78-Mbit/s parallel output. The VSC8166 1:16 demultiplexer provides deserialization of a single 2.5-Gbit/s input into 16-bit, 155-Mbit/s parallel output datastreams.

Each device is packaged in a 128-pin PQPF. Production quantities are available now. In 1000-unit quantities, the VSC8131 costs $147, the VSC8132 is $105, and the VSC8166 costs $131.
